ENVIRO 2023
Project type
Art Installation
Date
July 2023
Location
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
My art installation focuses on one of the biggest threats to marine life—plastic pollution. Using eco-friendly and recycled materials, I created a turtle to represent the countless sea creatures that are affected by plastic waste in our oceans.
The shell of the turtle is made from natural materials, like leaves and coconut shells, while its surroundings are littered with representations of plastic waste, including plastic bags and wrappers, symbolizing the harmful pollutants that endanger marine ecosystems. This installation demonstrates the tragic reality that many marine animals, especially turtles, often mistake plastic for food, which can lead to fatal consequences.
This project was showcased during the ' ENVIRO 2023 ' event, hosted by the prestigious *Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. I received a **Certificate of Participation* for my efforts in demonstrating the ill effects of plastic pollution and my commitment to raising awareness about environmental sustainability. The certificate was awarded in recognition of my "Art Installation on Marine Conservation" and my creative approach to spreading a crucial message about the need to protect our oceans.
Being part of this event at IIT Madras was truly inspiring. Surrounded by like-minded individuals and mentors, I was able to explore innovative solutions to environmental challenges. The institution’s focus on sustainability and its reputation for scientific excellence pushed me to think deeper about the role art can play in advocating for environmental change.
Through this project, I wanted to raise awareness about how plastic pollution is destroying ocean habitats and harming innocent wildlife. Turtles, in particular, are incredibly vulnerable because they often swallow plastic, which can cause blockages and other health issues. My hope is that this art piece will inspire people to rethink their use of plastic and encourage actions that protect our oceans and the creatures that call it home. By reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, we can help save marine life and preserve our planet for future generations.
